Hypo-Allergenic cats, what will they think of next?

Well here’s the first post as requested by Stacy Enjoy!

First off let me start out by telling you a little something about myself, I am biased, I hate cats. It’s a long depressing story as to why so lets just leave it at I hate ‘em.

Until Stacy mentioned this I had never heard of it. Wow Hypo-Allergenic cats, genetically altered to remove allergens. Too bad they couldn’t genetically alter a cats bad attitude. Since I hadn’t heard of it, I had to do some research, there’s a few hours of my time that I will never get back!
First off, this wonderful invention is by a company named Allerca, oddly I had never heard of them either, how intriguing. I read through their site and found this interesting tidbit!

A glycoprotein, Fel d 1, secreted by the sebaceous glands, is the major cat allergen. This allergen is found in the fur, pelt, saliva, serum, urine, mucous, salivary glands, and hair roots of the cat. The main sources of the allergen, however, are the skin and saliva. Cat allergen is so small it can remain airborne for months. It is about 10 times smaller than pollen or dust particles.

Nice, yet another reason to not like cats! According to them, the removal of this allergen will not harm the cat in any way. How the heck do they know? They just said on another page that the first kitten won’t be born till 2007. I would think you would have to observe one through it’s entire life cycle to make that determination. Well let’s see what else we can find out. You know, now that I think about it, I’m curious as to what this allergen stuff is for on the cat. I mean it must be there for a reason. After a web search I came up with this, and this. No real answers there. Then a search on Allerca themselves turned up no news from them other than this, they evidently appeared out of no where! So then I read their legal info and found this great quote!

Although we believe in the hope and promise of hypoallergenic cats and anticipate that hypoallergenic cats may assist those persons who suffer from certain allergies or other medical conditions, we do not guarantee that a hypoallergenic cat is useful for the treatment of any particular disorder and is a matter for your physicians to determine.

In other words, if this cat makes you sneeze it isn’t our fault.
I was hooked, I decided to preorder one of these bad boys. Off to the reservation page I went. HOLY GUACAMOLE these suckers cost $3,500! On the plus side I can lay down a $250 deposit for my new allergen free kitty!
So let me see if I got this straight. I can send $250 to a company I have never heard of for a product they haven’t even made yet and they don’t even guarantee it will help? Oh sign me up now please!

LOL. I read an article somewhere yesterday about the hypo-allergenic kitties and was going to write about it myself, but you’ve done such a better job. Thanks! BTW…I’m a dog person.

I’m with you on hating cats! I think cats are the Jekyll and Hyde of the pet world. My wife isn’t a cat person and I don’t think I could’ve married someone that is!

I didn’t know you were so deep Jeff.

That says it all about cats … you’d have to love cats an awful lot to pay a $250 deposit, let alone the balance.
