In The Beginning...There Were No Diapers: Laughing and Learning In The First Years Of Fatherhood

Book Title: In The Beginning There Were No Diapers
Author: Tim Bete
Paperback: 189 pages
Publisher: Sorin Books

From the opening Sentence I knew what I had lived this book.

When our daughter Anna Maria was born, she slept a lot- except when we wanted her to sleep.

I had been there and done that, 4 times to be exact.

In the Beginning takes a humorous look at the early years of fatherhood. He covers potty talk, if you have ever potty trained a child you know what that is. He covers the pitfalls of bribing a child to use the potty, I gained a few pounds myself learning that lesson. He covers many subjects such as:

  1. changing diapers in an airplane bathroom
  2. lullabies to avoid
  3. training prospective parents
  4. wives and superpowers
  5. t-ball

And so much more.

His writing style brings to mind Dave Barry with a little Erma Bombeck thrown in for good measure. Considering he is the director of the Erma Bombeck writer workshop at the University of Dayton that last comparison makes a lot of sense. Don’t get me wrong, he has his own style, and a darn good one at that, it’s just that you can’t help but make that comparison.

As you read you don’t realize that you are learning a lesson, actually several lessons. He summarizes this all at the end of the book in a touching chapter that speculates on future events.

I recommend this book highly, especially if you like to laugh. Whatever you do though do not read it in bed while your spouse is trying to sleep, otherwise you may end up sleeping on the couch. I laughed, I cried (from laughing so hard), I slept on the couch.

Great book, two thumbs up, 5 stars, a+, and all those other good ratings!
