Where have all the flowers gone?

December 6, 2005 · Posted in For His glory

I’m going to tell you a tale, a sad tale of a life gone astray. Of course I am only theorizing on parts of this but on others the evidence is clear!

I went on a search yesterday for a new pocket bible, the one I usually carry was starting to look pretty shabby and falling apart at the seams, not so much from use as being sat on by my huge rear! Anyway, I went to my usual haunt, Half Price Books, I love that place. I went through the racks there several times but wasn’t finding what I wanted.

I had pretty much given up when I gave it one more shot through the mess of bibles they had on the shelves. That was when I noticed it, an Expositor’s New Testament in excellent shape, and only 6 bucks, too cool. I took my find to the counter and payed my chunk of change. Keep in mind that bibles are expensive and these are no exception, they usually run about 45$.

It didn’t take long to figure out the low price. It had been a gift to a son from some caring parents who wanted to make sure that God was in their sons life. The inscription said “for your birthday August 2005. Please take care of this, this is Gods words Love Mom and Dad”. How sad I thought, he hadn’t even kept it a full year before getting rid of it. But why didn’t he want Gods words anymore? It was a mystery, one that was soon solved.

In the back of this bible is a section for note taking. While there were no notes there it was evident that there had been. While it is just indentations in the page you can clearly see this young man was pleading with God for something. The word please is easily made out several times and the words God please make her come. The words of a young man in love? I think that may be the case. But maybe that love was misdirected. If his love had been focused more on God and less on this mystery woman, he would still have this bible I hold here now. Maybe then he would have won the woman he so desired had his focus been on God.

There you have it. The tale of a love lost, several times over. I hope that this young man, where ever he is, finds his way back to God. It may be hard since I have his road map but if he ever wants his map back, he has only to ask!

God Bless,
Jeff A

Holy man, Jeff, this tale gave me goosebumps. What a story. Worth WAY more than $6, if you ask me. Would make a great sermon! Thanks for sharing, made me think.

This is a thought provoking post, but it was also a bit like reading something I shouldn’t have. did you feel that when you wrote.

My prayers go for this son, may he find God wherever he is right now.
